At some point someone may come to your door and ask you to sign a petition for a dissolution referendum. The petitioners that have gone door-to-door in other communities have often phrased their request in very misleading ways. You have the right to NOT SIGN the petition but the new law may not allow you to remove your name should you choose to sign. If you read the new law, you will not find specific words about this inability to remove your name from the petition. Legal advisers suggest that it is often what is not contained in the writing of a law that dictates the enforceable decisions made about that law. In Li’l Abner’s words: “If it ain’t there, it’s probably so!”
The KVIS is launching a campaign through the Keep Kenmore Initiative to help Village residents remember to not sign a petition of dissolution. The campaign slogan is: Kenmore is Fine – Do Not Sign! The slogan was created by KVIS member, Rev. Ben Eder who mentioned the slogan at a general KVIS meeting; members broke into applause after he read it because it’s catchy and helps convey the message so well.
The Kenmore is Fine – Do Not Sign campaign will feature informational literature and will also include posters that will be placed in all public places and in the windows of Village businesses. We’re grateful to the Kenmore Merchants Association for supplying the funds for the posters -thank you KMA.
If a petitioner should come to your home with the goal of getting you to sign a petition, please choose to do at least one of the following:
Please remember to be civilized in your dealings with the petitioners; they have the right to petition and we have the right to not support their cause.
