E. B. Green Landscape Architecture Contest

The Municipal Building

The members of the KVIS Public Properties Committee have been focusing on some of the aspects of the Village’s public spaces that contribute to its unique character.  Kenmore’s Municipal Building is a recognized architectural gem, designed by E.B. Green in Art Deco style with some overtones of Arts & Crafts style. The Village Green area in front of the Municipal Building could be enhanced to reflect the architectural significance of the building, providing a visual and social focal point for Village life.  We researched the history of the building, E.B. Green, and his architectural firm then created a publication that we presented to the Village Board for approval.  Following approval, we designed a contest that we have sent to all the colleges and universities throughout the United States that offer Landscape Architecture programs.  Look here to see some of the many E.B. Green designed buildings: http://www.pbase.com/kjosker/ebgreen

The Contest

The parameters of the contest include redesigning the Village Green area in keeping with the style of the time period in which the Municipal Building was built.  The contest parameters also include that the design be mindful of the many ways the Village Green is used and maintained, and that the design enhances visual appeal while highlighting and being sympathetic to the architecture of the Municipal Building.

The contest winner will receive a $500 prize along with other benefits. Once the winning design is approved by all involved, the KVIS will secure grant monies and donations to pay for the approved renovation plans.

Tourism

One of the KVIS’ long-term goals is to help create new ways to bring people here to Kenmore.  Cultural and architectural tourism is a very fast growing part of our nation’s economy. Creating awareness of and enhancing the unique character of the Municipal building could help us to become a destination location as part of an E.B. Green architectural tour.  This initiative could also help to support an application for other national designations and possible grant funding.
